The Oakwood Cemetery Association recently honored the life of John C. Jay Jr. with the planting of an Auburn Toomer’s Oak at Oakwood Cemetery.
Jay, a lifelong Greensboro resident and longtime mayor of Greensboro, was known for his years of dedicated care and stewardship of the cemetery. The tree, a descendant of the iconic oaks at Auburn University’s Toomer’s Corner, was chosen as a meaningful tribute reflecting his love for Auburn University and his deep ties to the community.
In a fitting gesture, the Toomer’s Oak now stands watch over the cemetery—mirroring the same dedication and presence Jay gave for so many years.
“As it grows, this tree will serve as a living memorial to John Jay’s legacy and his enduring impact on our town,” said Oakwood Cemetery Association Board President Stephen “Buzzy” Barnette.
