Greensboro Middle School’s 8th grade student Liam Williams was recently honored as one of the recipients of the Martin Luther King Jr. Realizing the Dream Essay and Art Contest. The recognition ceremony took place at Shelton State Community College on Thursday, April 2.
The Martin Luther King Realizing the Dream Committee is made up of representatives from:
- The University of Alabama
- Stillman College
- Shelton State Community College
- Tuscaloosa’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference
This year’s theme was ‘Realizing the Dream through Faith and Action.’ The contest received 97 submissions in the form of art and essays from students ranging in grades 6th through 12th. Liam’s essay, “Faith Without Works is Dead,” was one of only five middle-school submissions chosen to receive recognition.
The honorees’ submissions were displayed in the Cadence Bank Art Gallery at Shelton from Monday, March 23 through Monday, April 6.
For his winning essay, Liam received an Android-based tablet complete with accessories, and Greensboro Middle School will receive $500 for programming that supports the work of Dr. King.
At the reception honoring the recipients, Liam was joined by:

- His librarian, Ms. Juanita Barrett
- His ELA teacher, Ms. Patricia Johnson-Moore
- His former Greensboro Middle School principal, Mr. Tony Sanders
