To the citizens of Greensboro,

Writing this is both humbling and bittersweet. Nineteen years ago, you placed your trust in me to lead this great city — and it has been the honor of my lifetime to serve as your mayor of the city I was born and grew up in.

When I first took office, I could never have imagined how quickly the years would pass, or how deeply this work would shape my heart. Together, we’ve faced challenges, celebrated victories, and built a stronger, more vibrant community — one that stands as a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with purpose and pride.

Throughout my time as Mayor, we’ve improved and strengthened our community and neighborhoods, supported our small businesses, and created spaces where individuals and families can grow. And through storms, literally and figuratively, we’ve stood shoulder to shoulder, helping one another, proving that the spirit of Greensboro is as strong as ever.

None of the city’s achievements were mine alone. They belong to the council members who’ve served with integrity, the city employees who’ve worked tirelessly behind the scenes, and to every resident who showed up — whether at a city hall meeting, a community gathering, or simply by lending a helping hand to a neighbor in need.

Public service for me isn’t about titles or recognition — it’s about listening, showing up, and doing what’s right even when it isn’t easy. It’s about believing in the people you serve. And I have never stopped believing in this city or its incredible people.

As I end this chapter as Mayor, I do so with deep gratitude and peace, knowing that the city is in good hands and that our best days still lie ahead. I look forward to seeing new leader- ship bring fresh ideas and energy, while carrying forward the values that make our community so special — faith, hard work, and unity.

To my family, thank you for your endless support and patience through long nights and early mornings. To the people of this city, thank you for allowing me to serve you — for your trust, your grace, and your partnership over the last 19 years.

I may be retiring from office, but I will never stop caring for this community. This will always be home.

God bless you all, and God bless our great city.
— Mayor Johnnie B. Washington
