Agency posts executive director, clerk positions as open for applications
The Greensboro Housing Authority is operating under interim management and seeking to fill both its executive director and occupancy clerk positions as federal officials investigate concerns about the agency’s operations, according to a letter sent to residents and statements made by Mayor Ralph Howard at the March 10 City Council meeting.
Beverly Barber, who brings more than 35 years of experience in public housing management, has been appointed acting management of the authority along with Whitney Ball, who is serving as acting points of contact, according to a March 20 letter sent to residents. Barber wrote that the two will serve in those roles until a permanent executive director and office clerk are hired, which is anticipated by mid-April. Both will be on-site weekly to address operational matters and resident concerns.
The letter asked residents to visit the office to verify the amount of rent they are required to pay, noting there has been “misunderstanding regarding recent rent increases.” The authority said it wants to ensure all accounts are accurate and is committed to working with residents to establish reasonable payment arrangements for anyone behind on rent.
“In light of recent allegations concerning the Housing Authority, management is committed to ensuring that these matters do not negatively impact your tenancy,” Barber wrote. “However, all residents are reminded that compliance with the terms and conditions of your lease remains mandatory.”
At the March 10 council meeting, Howard told the council the situation was being handled by federal officials and expressed concern about the allegations.
“I don’t think it’s appropriate for a person to be accused of stealing millions of dollars,” Howard said. “Because of this, we will have to have an interim director. There is a member on the board that is there illegally. We are doing what we can to remedy the situation. We are close to losing our federal funding based on this mess.”
The authority has posted an opening for an executive director, with the position to remain open until filled. The job requires a bachelor’s degree in business management, public administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience in housing management, along with a minimum of five years of high-level administrative or operational experience in housing or community development. Salary is listed as open depending on qualifications.
A separate posting for a part-time occupancy clerk opened March 23 with a closing date of April 1. Applications for both positions are available at the Greensboro Housing Authority, 101 Centerville Circle.
The Greensboro Housing Authority owns and operates 66 public housing apartments.
