Council votes to release annual Christmas parade budget appropriation

Greensboro City Council voted at its meeting Tuesday night to release its annual budget appropriation for the Greensboro Christmas Parade. Annetta Constant, a representative of the Christmas Parade Committee, spoke before the Council. Constant informed the Council of her Committee’s fundraising efforts on behalf of the parade, and asked that the Council release the $5,000 allotment set aside for the parade in the city’s annual budget. Constant also asked that the Greensboro Police Department would assist the Committee in crowd control at the parade. Councilmember Curtis made a motion to grant the allotment release to the Christmas Parade Committee. Councilmember Lewis seconded the motion, and it was unanimously carried.

The Council announced that the vehicle and equipment auction held by the City on October 18th raised $17,930 for the city.

A letter of appreciation from Diane Lewis, Hale County Library Director, was read by the city clerk. Lewis thanked the City and Council for the allotment of $4,000 that was issued to the Library. Lewis said the funds were used to update the space and improve conditions for the children’s reading program.

Minnette Smith, of the Greensboro Elementary Parent Facilitators group, spoke about her group’s efforts improve communications between parents and teachers in the Greensboro Elementary School. Smith’s group will be attending a conference at the Parent Teacher Leadership Academy in Birmingham and plan to make a presentation for the City of Greensboro sometime in the coming spring focusing on social and emotional learning that helps children manage emotions and make decisions. Smith hopes to bring a community member on as a member of an advisory council.

Mayor Washington asked that she keep the Council informed of her progress. Councilmembers Shepherd and Lewis volunteered to assist Smith in her efforts.

The October 28, 2025, City Council meeting was the last meeting for outgoing Mayor Washington. Washington told the Councilmembers it had been a pleasure working with them through the years, and he looks forward to Greensboro continuing to move ahead with the new administration.
