A 16-year-old Hale County High School student, Slade Holcomb, died after being struck by a pickup on Alabama 69 Sunday evening, Oct. 19, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Troopers said Holcomb was in the roadway near the 133 mile marker, about 12 miles south of Tuscaloosa, when a 2018 Ford F-150 driven by Warner L. Rainer, 76, of Tuscaloosa, struck him at approximately 6:40 p.m. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division is investigating; no additional details were available at press time.
A community Go-FundMe has been launched to assist Holcomb’s family with funeral expenses. The organizer wrote that Holcomb, a sophomore at Hale County High School, “passed away Sunday night while he and his classmates were working on their class homecoming float.” The post adds, “If anyone knows Jerry and Trina Holcomb, you know they would never ask for anything and would give the shirts off their backs to help someone. They are in need of help to bury their son, and I am asking for those who know and love them to help if you can.”
