Jake Arcement is from New Orleans and is studying Neuroscience and Spanish at the University of South Carolina. His interests in mental health support drew him to Project Horseshoe farm. Although he spent only one month in Greensboro, he says the experience had a profound impact. Both the team of fellows and the people of Greensboro made him feel right at home, and some of his fondest memories include leading Choir at Community Center Program, music bingo at the nursing home, and Wednesday night frisbee at Lions Park. Jake’s internship affirmed his desire to pursue a career in mental health, and his next step is to attend medical school!

Madeline Duncan

Madeline Duncan hails from Newton, Kansas. She is a huge proponent of everything Great Plains, but found herself in New York City for college at Columbia University. She has double majors in Biology and Public Health and is passionate about rural medicine. At home, you can find Madeline in her garden where she nurtures her horticulture skills with her grandmother. Madeline was our resident chef at HSF – we were lucky to regularly enjoy her baked goods including, most recently, cinnamon rolls. Madeline is president of the culinary society at Columbia and once judged a dining hall cooking competition with the celebrity chef Robert Irvine. Madeline is interested in how sustainable agriculture improves health outcomes and some of her favorite memories this summer were at the Auburn Rural Studio Farm where she engaged these interests. Madeline hopes to eventually go to medical school. For now, Madeline is busy trying to visit every state and was happy checking off number thirty three (Alabama) this summer.

Rachael Yuan

Rachael Yuan comes to Greensboro from Franklin, Massachusetts. She is a rising senior at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she is double majoring in Neuroscience and Psychology with a minor in Education. As an intern at Horseshoe Farm, she was passionate about working with the students in Project HSF’s summer youth program as well as with Project HSF’s high school interns. In her free time she enjoys crocheting blankets to donate to the children’s hospital, volunteering as a Mandarin interpreter at a free clinic for uninsured families, and teaching science experiments inpatient pediatric units. She also enjoys traveling and has been to 19 countries so far. When she wasn’t enjoying quality time with her friends or hunting for a sweet treat, you might have found her playing the piano or shopping at the Bargain Box. In the future, Rachael hopes to attend medical school. As she finished up her internship, she was most excited to help the high school interns complete their final projects!

Riley Gramley

Riley Gramley is a rising senior at Brown University, majoring in English with hopes of attending medical school. At school, he is involved as a violinist for the Appalachia String Band and editor for the College Hill Independent newspaper. Originally from Ashland, Oregon (home of the Oregon Shakespeare festival), Riley enjoys watching plays (White Snake, by Mary Zimmerman is his favorite), running cross country, and hiking. He is also passionate about climate writing — using storytelling to explore the implications of climate change on public health. At Horseshoe Farm, Riley has loved teaching English to high school students in our Summer Youth Program. His favorite memory has been reading the “Where I’m From” poems the high schoolers composed. Outside of HSF, you can find Riley at the jeans rack at any thrift store or scrounging around for free food. He’s excited to continue exploring Greensboro!
