Deadlines approach for Aug. 27 municipal elections

Voters in Greensboro, Moundville, and Newbern will vote on mayor and council positions

With municipal elections set for Tuesday, August 26, 2025, voters across Hale County face upcoming deadlines to ensure participation. The last day to register to vote was July 27, which was also the last day to establish residency for the general election. The final day for mayors to deliver absentee ballots and election supplies to municipal clerks was July 29. Absentee ballot applications sent by mail must be received by August 19, while hand-delivered applications will be accepted until August 21. Emergency absentee ballot requests may be submitted until August 25. Polling places throughout the county will be open on election day from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Additional election milestones include the posting of sample ballots by July 25, the appointment of election officials by August 11, and public testing of electronic voting counters on August 12. Election officers and polling locations will be published no later than August 15. Starting August 18, absentee voters without acceptable identification will receive provisional ballots. All ballots returned by mail must arrive by noon on election day.

Greensboro
Greensboro will elect a new mayor this year as longtime mayor J.B. Washington will not seek re-election. Four candidates have qualified for the mayoral race: Darrayl K. Agnew, Ralph A. Howard, Melvin Lightning, and Quincy Patrick. The city council’s current members— Mary Bragg, Pearl Shepherd, Ashley Kyser, KaTerriaial Lewis, and Bobbie Curtis—qualified unopposed and will continue to serve.

Moundville
Most municipal offices in Moundville will also go uncontested in this year’s election. Mayor Tony Lester, along with council members Greg McCray of District 1, Barbara Spencer of District 2, Ashley Nevin of District 3, and Ashley Windham of District 4, will all return to office without opposition. The only contested race will take place in District 5, where voters will choose between Timothy Dillard, Susie Patrick, and Gwen Tinker.

Newbern
In Newbern, Patrick Braxton and Laird Cole will compete for the position of mayor. The race for Council Seat 1 will also be decided by voters, with Anne S. Bailey, Voncille Brown Thomas, and Patricia A. Jackson qualifying. Four incumbent council members— Barbara Patrick, Janice Quarles, James Robinson, and Lynn Blake—qualified unopposed and will retain their seats.
