Greensboro City Council will hold a public meeting next month to rezone a property at 1106 Tuscaloosa Street. The Greensboro Planning Commission made the initial recommendation to rezone the property, which is a home, but is currently zoned as a business. Paul Bennefield, a member of the community who spoke at the meeting, said the location had been erroneously listed as a business sometime in the 1930’s. Bennefield said his son lived at the property for several years, which was how he became aware of the incorrect zoning.
Councilmember Ashley Kyser made a motion to hold a public meeting on the proposed rezoning. Councilmember Bobbie Curtis seconded the motion, which carried by unanimous voice vote.
Curtis made a motion to apply for a 2025 Airport Infrastructure Project Grant with the Federal Aviation Administration. Councilmember KaTerriaeial Lewis seconded the motion, which carried by unanimous voice vote. The proceeds from this grant, if the city is awarded it, will be used to make improvements at the city’s airport.
Civilworx Construction LLC submitted a request for final payment for a project the company completed for the city. Civilworx is asking for $23,744.13 for the 2022 Street and Drainage Rehabilitation Project. Curtis made a motion to submit the final payment to Civilworx Construction. Kyser seconded the motion, and the motion carried by unanimous voice vote.
Eve Engle Kneeland, President of the Hale County Library Association, requested the closure of a section of Beacon Street on Friday, May 2 from 5:30 to 9:30PM. Kneeland said the Library Association will be holding a 100th anniversary celebration of the Hale County Library at that time. Kneeland said she expects a large crowd for the centennial celebration and asked the Council to close that part of the street to make room for tables and food. The event will feature live entertainment, a guest speaker, silent auction, and a showcase of 1920’s books. Kneeland invited the public to attend.
Police Chief Lewis said he had no objection to the street closure. Curtis made a motion to approve Kneeland’s request. Kyser seconded the motion, which carried by unanimous voice vote.
Councilmembers reported no complaints from their respective districts. Kyser noted that Greensboro had recently been named among “Ten Underrated Small Towns in Alabama Perfect for a Day Trip” in a recent story published by AL.com.
